All about museums and art galleries

Museums display collections of objects and information that reflect some aspect of human existence or its environment. Such collections, almost always valuable, have existed since antiquity. It was during the Renaissance that the name “museum” as it is understood today was given to buildings expressly dedicated to the conservation and exhibition of their permanent collections. On the other hand, there are art galleries, where paintings and sculptures are displayed in temporary exhibitions, without necessarily having permanent collections.

Origin

The term museum comes from the Greek “museion”, a temple and place dedicated to the Muses, the deities who inspire music and art. This term designates the first “museum” built in Alexandria around 280 BC by Ptolemy I Soter, founder of the Greek dynasty of the Lagarids in Egypt. It was a complex that served as a sanctuary and a centre of intellectual research.
